The archaeological complex of La Loma is formed by the fortified city of El Castro, an important oppidum of the Camáricos community that is part of the Cantabrian people, one of the Celtic peoples that inhabited the north of the Iberian Peninsula, which occupied both slopes of the Sierra del Brezo. Its territory would range from the Guardo area to Cervera de Pisuerga, the valley of the birth of the Carrión to the north and part of the plains that bordered the Vacceos settled in the Saldaña area to the south.

The enclave occupies about 16'8 hectares and controlled the natural communications knot that runs at the foot of the mountain range and the one that continues through the Valdavia valley to the south. This central oppidum was occupied by an important indigenous community between the 6th-1st centuries BC. They were societies of warrior culture, which were dedicated to agriculture and livestock, with an economy adapted to the mountains.
