MASKS. SYMBOLS OF IDENTITY

This international, traveling exhibition project explores and highlights the profound symbolic and cultural value of ritual masks as intangible heritage shared by diverse communities worldwide. The exhibition reflects the enduring tradition and ritual memory of various peoples. It showcases diverse ritual expressions from Leon, Galicia, Zamora , and Bragança, alongside manifestations from Mexico, Peru, and the Makah people in Washington State (USA).

The exhibition presents the creation process of an illustrated book about the recent history of Beira Alta, in the interior of Portugal, narrated through local lore. Traditionally, its inhabitants lived off subsistence farming and herding. Today, it is an aging region severely affected by depopulation.
