The Belmonte de Campos castle was rebuilt by Juan Manuel, Marquis of Villena, around the middle of the 15th century. Years later it successively became the property of the Manrique family, the Count of Oñate and the Marquis of Montealegre. It is also probable that the oldest part of the fortress was designed by Gómez de Isla, due to the similarities between the castle and his other constructions such as Fuensaldaña or Peñafiel. Around 1880, the land on which the castle was located was acquired by some residents of the town at a price of 2,000 reales. It would then function as a dovecote and also as a source of supply of stones for the construction of houses in the area. In 2013 the rain and the wind contributed to knocking down the gable next to the entrance arch. In mid-September 2017, the Belmonte de Campos City Council formalized the acquisition of ownership of half of the castle, allowing it to have from then on capacity to carry out improvement and rehabilitation works on the monument.
