Hermitage of Our Lady of Fernandiel
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Fernandiel, located in the town of Muga de Sayago and built in the 13th century, is a jewel of Romanesque art and a historical treasure of the province of Zamora. Although it has undergone several modifications over time, its greatest value lies in the impressive frescoes that adorn several of its walls, considered the largest collection of mural paintings in the region. For this reason, some call it the "Sistine Chapel of Sayago." These paintings, painted in the first half of the 16th century, have recovered their splendor thanks to a recent restoration, which also led to the publication of a digital book dedicated to preserving and disseminating this unique heritage. The frescoes are distributed in the Main Chapel, the Nave, and the Triumphal Arch, depicting scenes such as the Adoration of the Magi, the Nativity, the Assumption of the Virgin, and a crucified Christ on Calvary. Also noteworthy is the sculpture of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, positioned so that the faithful can see it from the entrance of the temple.
