La Peña del Castro is a pre-Roman settlement located on the mountain of the same name that shows the characteristics of a fortified settlement.

A strategic geographical location was combined with the construction of artificial defenses. In the case of La Ercina, this involved a powerful wall with several enclosures.

The circular wall encloses the living area, of which we know of two huts. The dwellings have an oval floor plan and are built with a stone base and walls of mud and branches. The walls would have been plastered white and possibly painted. The ongoing investigation at the hill fort continues to yield new findings. The latest excavations have taken place on a building with a different appearance from those discovered to date. It is built of red sandstone, and, moreover, the materials found do not appear to be from a domestic setting. Researchers are inclined to think that it is a cultic building, a temple of the settlement.
