The Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza, located in the municipality of Hortigüela, is one of the emblematic spiritual and political centers of the Spanish Middle Ages, known as the "Cradle of Castile".

It was founded in 912 by Gonzalo Fernández, father of the first independent count of Castile, Fernán González, as a hermitage in the neighboring caves of the Arlanza valley.

According to legend, in the area where the monastery is located, the hermit Saint Pelayo prophesied the great future of Count Fernán González, who in gratitude would turn the enclave into the most influential in the county, in fact it was his burial place until, after the Mendizábal confiscation, his remains were moved to the Collegiate Church of Covarrubias, where they rest in the main altar.
