The Palencia Museum. From graduating from the Annenberg School for Communication in Pennsylvania in 1964 with a degree in photojournalism until her death just over fifty years later, Mary Ellen Mark worked as a documentary photographer, creating groundbreaking, vivid photo essays that explore the diverse realities of people in complex situations. Her subjects were often women.
A passionate witness, Mark used photography and film to delve deeper into the lives of others, as a way to embrace their humanity and share it with a wider audience, giving her subjects a relevant, often powerful voice. Thus, she focused her attention on the women in the psychiatric ward of Oregon State Hospital ; on the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, illuminating the strength and commitment of this icon of generosity; as she did with the young runaway Erin Blackwell, known as Tiny, whom she portrayed over three decades in her arduous battle with poverty, drug addiction, and her role as a mother of ten children. In each of her images, the artist not only captures a moment, but tells the story of a struggle, of hope, and vulnerability.
This exhibition is part of the International Photography Festival of Castilla y León.
