Petra von Kant, a successful designer recently separated from her second husband, lives with her secretary Marlene, her assistant and almost slave. When one of her best friends introduces her to Karin, an opportunistic young woman from humble origins, Petra falls madly in love with her and promises to make her an international model. The two women then begin a tumultuous relationship.

The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant—feverishly written during a flight between Berlin and Los Angeles and premiered in 1917—belongs to Rainer Werner Fassbinder's (1946-1982) most brilliant period. The play, which was adapted into a film the following year, was praised by international critics for its stylized portrayal of romantic heartbreak in a purely feminine universe. The German playwright, who revitalized the Brechtian legacy with American melodrama, unleashes his full arsenal to speak to us of loneliness and domination in this Sapphic love story that unfolds through ellipses and silences. Rakel Camacho adapts and directs this classic of the European repertoire, with a fresh, image-laden approach, exploring power dynamics, morbid obsession, and the toxic need to be accepted in the eyes of others.

Genre: Theatre. Style: Dramatic. Duration: 90 min.
