OPERA FOR CHILDREN: HANSEL AND GRETEL
The original tale of Hansel and Gretel, popularized by the Brothers Grimm, has traditionally been a dark story, marked by child abandonment, the stereotypical figure of the wicked stepmother, and the extreme violence of a heartless witch. Later, Engelbert Humperdinck adapted it into an opera at the end of the 19th century, creating a musically rich score, but one conceived for an adult audience and with an extensive and dense dramatic structure. Ferro Teatro offers a comprehensive revision of both the classic tale and its operatic version, adapting them to the sensibilities and needs of 21st-century children. In our production, we have selected the most representative and brilliant musical fragments from Humperdinck's score, translated them into Spanish, and integrated them into a dynamic dramaturgy that alternates live singing with spoken scenes, comedic moments, thrilling situations, and a constant breaking of the fourth wall that makes the audience an active part of the story. The plot is also profoundly transformed. Far from the abandonment and cruelty depicted in the original story, our protagonists belong to a humble but close-knit family, enduring financial hardship without losing their affection or their desire for their children to return to school. The accidental breakage of a small jug, a symbol of family history, prompts Hansel and Gretel to venture into Everglow Woods to repair it. There, they discover that the true danger lies not in hunger or poverty, but in manipulation and the allure of easy money. The witch Magpie, far removed from any previous references in the classic tale, is presented as a narcissistic, capricious character obsessed with shiny objects and recognition. Max and Valery, former humans under a spell who retain their kindness, work in her service and help the siblings break free from the enchantment.
