The poetic avant-garde has seen one of its most original and enigmatic fruits blossom in the work of Justo Alejo, from Zamora. Anchored in the social changes of the second half of the 20th century and the philosophical conflicts that arose from these new horizons, Alejo's poetry shines with its essential singularity and innovative vocation. Historically, Justo Alejo belongs to the Generation of '50, a group of poets born shortly before the Spanish Civil War who developed their literary careers during the postwar period. At its poetic roots, Alejo's figure and work are forged in the literary milieu of Valladolid, where, as early as the 1920s and 30s, Francisco Pino and José María Luelmo had founded several avant-garde magazines—such as Meseta, DDOOSS, and A la nueva ventura—and which, in the 1950s, when Justo arrived in the city, was a vibrant ecosystem of painters, sculptors, writers, and artists of all kinds and styles. It was in Valladolid that his avant-garde vocation was born and where he published his first poems, although other places—his native Sayago, Paris, Madrid—would contribute to shaping a life in which poetry became his reason for being.

In January 1995, his documentary collection was donated to the Jorge Guillén Foundation , the institution that published his Complete Poetry in 1997 and is now publishing this anthology. Fabulous Discounts takes the 1997 canonical edition as its starting point to offer a representative sample of Alejo's entire oeuvre. The anthology's editor, Carlos Martín Aires , of the Jorge Guillén Foundation, includes poems from Alejo's fundamental books ( Wastelands Waiting, From This Stick, To Smooth, Lunar Seeds, Monumental Discounts, Separate from the Same, They Are Pure, Today Disenchantment Washes More White, Only a Few Words, etc. ) to demonstrate how Justo Alejo's work is capable of forging a worldview through language, by means of a liberating rupture that redeems it from trivialization. Justo Alejo knew how to fuse the radical avant-garde with an ethical commitment that has imbued his entire work with a substantial humanism.
