The Spanish universe of the Austro-Hungarian composer Óscar de la Cinna (1836-1906)", by Antonio Hernández Moreno.
Óscar de la Cinna (Budapest 1836 – Jerez de la Frontera 1906) was a composer and piano virtuoso born in Budapest. During his childhood and youth, he lived in Warsaw, Prague, and Vienna. He was a student of the composers Carl Czerny and Franz Liszt. After abandoning his law studies to devote himself to music, he gave concerts in Paris, London, and Lisbon, before settling permanently in Spain as a piano teacher and composer.
He composed more than a thousand works for piano, most of which were published in Spain and distributed throughout Europe. While his early compositions were typical salon pieces in the style of the period, largely influenced by Beethoven (of whom he was an expert interpreter and the principal introducer to Spain), he soon shifted to a more popular style, reflecting the musical experiences he had during his travels in Spain, especially in Andalusia.
The Spanish work of Óscar de la Cinna would therefore, despite the differences and similarities, be on par with that of Pablo Sarasate. In both cases, the popular melody is elevated to its maximum treatment and musical expression, on the piano and violin respectively, creating a repertoire of Spanish masterpieces of interest not only to foreign audiences but also to any major publishing house of the time.
Incredibly, his works have never, if ever, been programmed in concerts, nor have they been recorded. It is truly sad, as well as surprising, that his music has fallen into obscurity over the years, especially when we recognize in it the fundamental elements that identify Spanish classical music, or, in other words, great music.
May this book and the two accompanying CDs serve to spark interest in its study and rehabilitation, as well as to open new lines of research that will lead us to a deeper understanding and love of our Spanish music and culture.
Free admission until full capacity.
