Conference "Eclipses throughout history: fear, myth and science"

Wednesday, June 24, 7:00 p.m.

Speaker: Juan Nolasco, from the Planetário do Porto – Centro Ciência Viva, Portugal

The solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, will be one of the most significant astronomical phenomena of the coming years across the Iberian Peninsula. Starting with this event, the conference offers a journey through the history of eclipses, exploring how different cultures have interpreted them through the lens of fear, myth, and science.
It will also address their representations in art, literature and culture, as well as the importance of observing these phenomena in an informed, conscious and safe manner.

The Porto Planetarium – Living Science Center, is one of Portugal's leading centers for astronomical outreach. Part of the University of Porto and the Living Science network, it welcomes thousands of students and visitors each year, bringing astronomy and space exploration closer to the public.
