"Counting Music" is a music appreciation talk led by Ávila-born conductor José Luis López Antón, principal conductor of the Avila Symphony Orchestra. This initiative stems from this young musician's desire to bring the audience closer to the intricacies of the great masterpieces in the history of music.
Using accessible, relatable language and avoiding technical jargon , "Contando la Música" seeks to foster the enjoyment of classical music through guided comprehension, so that the audience can gain a more concrete understanding of the different stylistic currents in the history of music.
The fourth talk in this new cycle presents My Mother the Goose, by Maurice Ravel.
Maurice Ravel – Ma mère l'Oye (My mother the Goose)
Suite for piano four hands (1908–1910), later orchestrated in 1911 and expanded
like ballet. Inspired by children's stories by Perrault and Madame d'Aulnoy, it combines simplicity and
characteristic timbral refinement of Ravel's Impressionist style.
Orchestral version (suite in 5 movements):
1. Pavane from Belle au bois dormant : A brief, lyrical, and nostalgic introduction.
2. Petit Poucet : Wandering melody that evokes the lost footprints of Tom Thumb in the forest.
3. Laideronnette, impératrice des pagodes : Pentatonic and exotic sonorities of character
eastern.
4. Les entretiens de la Belle et de la Bête: Contrast between Beauty (clarinet) and the Beast
(contrabassoon), with a radiant final metamorphosis.
5. Le jardin féerique : Great crescendo that culminates in a luminous finale, evoking the magic of the
stories.
The work is a model of orchestral miniature: delicate, evocative and exquisitely instrumented.
