The Palencia Museum. Jesse A. Fernández (1925-1986) is said to have been a wandering spirit, who not only made places his own, but also their inhabitants. Thus, both urban landscapes and a vast gallery of portraits shaped his work.
Cuban, born to Asturian parents, his life spanned two continents: Europe and America. His constant travels began the day he left for Asturias with his mother at the age of seven. From then on, Havana, New York, Madrid, Paris, and other places in Latin America became the setting for his work.
He divided his work between two vocations: photography and painting, and along the way he encountered other nomads like himself, many of them prominent figures in the culture and arts of the second half of the 20th century. Under the artist's gaze, their faces speak to us of the essence of a time and its memory, of exile and creation. A privileged witness of his time, Fernández found in photography his most direct form of contact with reality. Thus, he became "the tireless eye that sees everything," as his friend, the writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante, described him: "the machine that captures every moment to immobilize it, a timid and audacious man, a vulnerable individual who behind the camera became a hero who knew no fear."
