Colloquium on the documentary The Song of the Hands , directed by María Valverde and screened at the Van Dick Cinemas.
Moderated by: Ana Isabel Payo Yáñez, coordinator of the HARAGEI Reading Club.
The Song of the Hands is María Valverde's debut film, a work that explores deafness through music, following three deaf musicians from Venezuela as they face the challenge of staging Beethoven's Fidelio for the first time in sign language, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. The film portrays the isolation the protagonists experience as deaf people, understanding that music is not only their refuge, but also their salvation and their hope.
This adaptation transforms Fidelio into a pioneering model of cultural accessibility, demonstrating that music can transcend sound and become an accessible, universal language. It is a transformative project that unites art, inclusion, and pedagogy, reinforcing the universal values of freedom, justice, empathy, and love.
