Bob Harris, a fading American actor, accepts an offer to film a Japanese whisky commercial in Tokyo. He's going through a severe midlife crisis and spends much of his free time in the hotel bar. It's there that he meets Charlotte, a young woman married to a photographer who has come to Tokyo to do a story; but while he works, his wife is bored to death. Besides the overwhelming sights and sounds of the immense city, Bob and Charlotte also share the emptiness in their lives. They gradually become friends, and as they explore the city together, they begin to wonder if their friendship could blossom into something more.

According to critics, it is a "dazzling film (...) a vivifying comedy, with great lyrical flight and powerful ironic depth. (...) The clash of faces between Bill and Scarlett is a delight of pure silk and pure intelligence."
