Drama directed by Rob Reiner in 1990 and starring James Caan and Kathy Bates

A writer named Paul Sheldon (James Caan) has spent years squandering his talent on commercially successful romantic stories featuring a character named Misery. Determined to break free from this cycle, he kills off the character and retreats to Colorado to write a serious novel. Upon finishing his work, he begins his journey home, but on a mountain road, he loses control of his car and suffers a serious accident. Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), a brash and impulsive woman and a great admirer of his, rescues him, takes him to her home, and nurses him back to health. Obsessed with the character of Misery, she holds Sheldon captive, forcing him to write a new story in which he resurrects the character.
