Almost systems. MUSAC CollectionThis exhibition analyzes the use of systems within contemporary art at the turn of the century, both conceptually and in terms of the production methods of artworks. The exhibition takes as its starting point Ai Weiwei's recent donation of the painting May 3rd (2023), which can be seen in the gallery. When discussing the remote antecedents of this work made with toy bricks, Ai traces its origins back to printing with movable wooden type during the Song Dynasty (c. 1000 CE).

Sculpture pavilion: refuge and exposure to the elementsSculpture Pavilion , by Ana Laura Aláez (Bilbao, 1964), is one of the most monumental works in the MUSAC Collection. This installation, conceived for the artist's solo exhibition of the same name in 2008, comprises thirty-two aluminum sheets that, when assembled, form a single unit. Sculpture and architecture converge through the use of emptiness as a material. An energetic residue becomes evident when an echo of lived experience manages to permeate the work, as happens in this case, where the metal reflects the imprint of what has already been lived. MUSAC, a museum that houses another, metaphorical one on a smaller scale, reactivates this analogy, and it is in this tension between container and content that the artistic act itself pulsates as an act of resistance and transformation.

Is there no place like home? MUSAC CollectionIn recent years, access to housing, the difficulty of becoming independent, rural depopulation, internal and external migration, and the transformation of cohabitation models have profoundly redefined what it means to inhabit a space. Intense and prolonged periods of cohabitation—whether due to economic pressures, social dynamics, or personal circumstances—have revealed tensions, contradictions, and vulnerabilities inherent in the idea of home. For some, it is a place of refuge and security; for others, it can become a space of limitation, precariousness, or exclusion.
