This session explores how exile transforms musical language. It's not a biographical snapshot, but rather a discussion of professional decisions: what is preserved, what is abandoned, and what is invented when changing language, audience, and working methods. We will listen to diverse trajectories—Bartók heading to the US, Weill from Berlin cabaret to Broadway, Stravinsky in transit, Schoenberg and his new discipline, Roberto Gerhard in Cambridge, Ravel in his "inner exile"—to recognize concrete traces: rhythms that harden, harmonies that seek new ground, timbres that acquire a new clarity. We will see how memory doesn't freeze: it organizes itself into form.

An invitation to hear uprooting not as a loss without remainder, but as a precise way of remaking the voice.

Talk by Carlos Cajaraville.
