The idea of ​​creating a catalogue of the organs in the province of Zamora arose in the Diocesan Historical Archive of Zamora when the archivist, José Carlos de Lera Maíllo , asked the then occasional researcher at the archive and current coordinator of this project if it would be possible to create such a catalogue. This occurred at the beginning of 2020. Almost two decades earlier, he recalled having helped Virginia Flórez de Santiago , a native of Zamora and a musicology student at the University of Valladolid, to carry out a lengthy research project precisely on the organs of the province, and now another person was interested in the same thing, although in this case focusing on the organ history of Benavente.

The COVID-19 crisis delayed the project until March 2021, when visits to the organs finally began with a team of researchers from Zamora. In October of that year, the team applied for grants from the Florián de Ocampo Institute of Zamoran Studies to cover expenses and submit the work for publication. A second round of visits then commenced, covering almost all the organs already examined.
