This successful play by Fernando Fernán-Gómez tells of his childhood memories during the Spanish Civil War. It premiered in April 1982 at the Teatro Español, directed by José Carlos Plaza, a mentor and friend of the theater company.
"Bicycles Are for Summer" tells the story of a Madrid family's daily life during the Spanish Civil War. The youngest son, Luisito, wants a bicycle in exchange for passing his physics exam, which he has failed. But the difficult circumstances force him to postpone the gift longer than expected. In this production, we try to reflect the social, political, and economic atmosphere of the years when the war was ever-present in the streets, in families, in homes. We do so through families, through ordinary characters from any building in Madrid, with their diverse ideologies, the antagonisms and conflicts, death and despair, but also the hope of the children who, in their naiveté, never imagined that in cities, places without deserts or vast countryside, the wars and battles they read about in novels could take place. Undoubtedly, this is a play with which we convey the absurdity of war and the necessity for peace and respect to reign in society.
