I WAS BORN IN A BEAN FIELD attempts to answer the question of why fewer and fewer people want to dedicate themselves to agriculture and livestock farming. I traveled 3,635 kilometers through sparsely populated areas of Spain asking this question to female farmers and ranchers. In their homes, orchards, barns, and farms, while picking fruit, irrigating terraces, or herding livestock, they shared with me why they dedicate themselves to this profession and why it is difficult for them to make a living from it.
This show is that journey. A journey accompanied by objects and food. A travel journal full of illustrations and questions. Six territories. And six interviews. A film location scout who fell in love with a valley in Lugo and became a farmer.
- A ten-year-old girl teaches in class how transhumance is done in the mountains of Avila.
- A desperate woman from Badajoz living in a rural area is frustrated by an environmental inspector who wants to take away her subsidy for planting ten fig trees.
- A sister and brother from La Mancha who used to play on piles of alpacas and remember that day once a year when their father took a vacation.
- A shepherdess from Zamora decides to sell her sheep and leave the village.
- A granddaughter of farmers from Almería is recovering a few abandoned terraces surrounded by hectares of olive groves.
And you, what kind of ancestor do you want to be?
