A new staging of Fernando de Rojas's classic seeks to highlight the role of women in the Middle Ages. We've never understood why "La Celestina," a play about prostitution, death, revenge, and envy, has always been a must-read for teenagers. Perhaps the veil of "classical theater," the ancient language, and the medieval costumes have managed to hide the calamities the play portrays. Elicia, a servant of the procuress, tells us the story of how La Celestina died due to the love affair between the young lovers Calixto and Melibea. Acting as a narrator, Elicia not only tells the story of the classic play but also contextualizes and explains the plot and the period in which it was written by its author. The story of La Celestina serves as an excuse to delve deeper into the role of women in the Middle Ages and literature, and to reflect on witchcraft and prostitution through poetry, with poems by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and María de Zayas. In our staging, we don't simply tell the story Fernando de Rojas intended; we dare to contextualize the plot, delve deeper into the themes it addresses, analyze the different types of love that emerge, and emphasize the role of women (maidens, witches, prostitutes) in the Middle Ages. This is intended to bring the classic closer to a young audience, but without the fireworks that distract from what truly matters.
