A new staging of Fernando de Rojas' classic work seeks to highlight the role of women in the Middle Ages. We have never understood why "La Celestina," a play about prostitution, death, revenge, and envy, has always been required reading for teenagers. Perhaps the veil of "classical theater," the archaic language, and the medieval costumes have managed to conceal the calamities the play reflects.

Elicia, a procuress's servant, tells us the story of Celestina's death, a consequence of the love affair between the young lovers Calixto and Melibea. As narrator, Elicia not only recounts the story of the classic work but also contextualizes and explains the plot and the era in which it was written. The story of Celestina serves as a springboard to explore the role of women in the Middle Ages and in literature, and to reflect on witchcraft and prostitution through poetry, with poems by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and María de Zayas.

In our staging, we not only tell the story that Fernando de Rojas wanted to convey to us; we dare to contextualize the plot, delve deeper into the themes it addresses, analyze the different types of love that appear, and highlight the role of women (maiden, witch, prostitute) in the Middle Ages, with the aim of bringing the classic closer to a young audience, but without fireworks that distract from what really matters.
