"Sancho in Barataria"

AZAR TEATRO invites us to witness "Sancho in Barataria" , a fun theatrical proposal that revives one of the most memorable and crazy episodes from the second part of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes.


The work transports us to Barataria, a place that, although geographically located in Aragon and surrounded by the Ebro River (hence its name "island"), is also an imaginary and dreamlike space, which can even feel like a nightmare from which it is possible to wake up.


In this peculiar territory, a group of dukes, seeking amusement, grant Sancho Panza the coveted government that Don Quixote had promised him. Considered by his mockers to be simply lacking in intelligence, Sancho demonstrates astonishing wisdom and good judgment in his role as governor, teaching a lesson in common sense to those who tried to laugh at him. In Barataria, Sancho's kindness prevails over the cruelty of those who play the trick on him, proving that justice is possible.


The work explores the timeless lessons contained both in the advice Don Quixote gives Sancho on how to be a good ruler and judge (such as self-knowledge, humility about one's lineage, the pursuit of truth, clemency, and resistance to corruption), and in the conclusions Sancho himself draws when he decides to resign from his position after always acting honestly. Sancho, who comes from a peasant family, reminds us that blood is inherited, but virtue must be earned!
