The story of the shack is a timeless tale that speaks to the eternal struggle between reason and violence, of a sick community with savage behaviors. It speaks to the essential identity that comes from being rooted in the land where we are born—a land that becomes a desert without its main source of sustenance: water.
Magüi Mira
In the theatrical version I propose, the main characters of the novel intervene, along with entities I call "shadows" that embody the mass of neighbors and other presences that help to recreate atmospheres and the passage of time.
The text is structured in three parts: Past and present, The intruders and The fire:
PAST AND PRESENT: In this first part we meet the Borrull family, the story of the eviction of the Barret family and the reason why the rest of the orchard prevents another family from settling in what was their shack.
THE INTRUDERS: The second part recounts the events from the arrival of Batiste's family at Uncle Barret's shack to the death of his youngest son. The entire village makes their lives miserable, but upon learning of this tragedy, the neighbors, feeling responsible and displaying a newfound compassion, come to the shack to comfort the family in their grief.
THE FIRE: Time has passed. Those considered intruders are falsely accepted and live like any other neighbors, but what the farmers so feared has come to pass: the landowners, seeing Uncle Barret's shack finally inhabited and having lost their fear of the peasants, once again demand more and more. A night of revelry and drinking unleashes pent-up emotions, ending the false harmony and provoking the tragic conclusion.
Putting this version in the hands of Magüi Mira, who loves words as much as action, guarantees an innovative staging with a narrative pulse that will captivate as much as the immortal novel.
Thank you Blasco, thank you Magüi
