The sandstones of Villamayor: geological characteristics and their response to climatic and anthropological agents

Speaker: Gaspar Alonso Gavilán (retired professor from the Department of Geology at the University of Salamanca).

The Villamayor Sandstones, along with the Salamanca Sandstones and granites, form the framework of the civil, military, and religious buildings that define the city of Salamanca as a World Heritage Site. The speaker will focus their presentation on the Villamayor Sandstones, referring to their geological characteristics such as petrological composition and facies, types of sandstone, sedimentology (origin: physical, chemical, and biological processes), historical geology (age and geological time), location (Villamayor de la Armuña area), extraction (quarries), and their reaction to external (climate, etc.) and anthropogenic agents.
