The Magistrate and the Miller's Wife is the pantomime that Manuel de Falla was composing from a theatrical work by Martínez Sierra, based on the famous novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, inspired in turn by the old romance The Miller of Arcos , when, fascinated by the performance of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in their Spanish debut in Madrid, in 1916, he accepted the commission that he made to him to turn it into what would be The Three-Cornered Hat that , with Ansermet directing, sets by Picasso and those legendary Ballets Russes with Leonid Massine as choreographer and principal dancer, would cause a sensation in July 1919 in London and catapult the composer to world fame.
