Suite à la mort de Jean II de Castille et à la montée au trône de son fils Henri IV, Isabelle de Portugal et ses enfants, Isabelle et Alphonse, sont transférés à Arévalo suivant le souhait de la Reine, qui détenait la seigneurie de cette ville.
Les historiens remarquent l’éducation soignée et la formation chrétienne qu’elle reçut à Arévalo où des franciscains jouèrent un rôle essentiel. Sa vie à Arévalo fut simple, mais sa relation avec les gens fut proche comme le prouve sa relation avec Beatriz de Bobadilla, fille du gouverneur du château d’Arévalo et sa meilleure amie.
Sa dévotion à la Vierge des angoisses d’Arévalo fut telle que la ville l’intronisa en tant que patronne à Grenade. Elle rendit visite à sa mère à Arevalo très souvent, en tant qu’infante et en tant que reine.
