El Camino de la Lengua a su paso por Ávila gira en torno a dos personajes: Santa Teresa de Jesús y San Juan de la Cruz, figuras que crearon una de las corrientes literarias de género religioso más importantes del siglo XVI: la mística. Fruto de la imposibilidad de comunicar su unión con Dios, ambos aportaron la real función del idioma a las letras: transmitir por medio de la palabra los sentimientos y las emociones espirituales con un gran realismo.
Hoy en día las figuras de Santa Teresa de Jesús y San Juan de la Cruz se recuerdan en las callejuelas abulenses. El testigo en la literatura lo tomarán después parte de los autores de la Generación del 98. Miguel de Unamuno, Pío Baroja y Azorín, desde otro punto de vista, también dibujarán la ciudad de Ávila con su pluma, contribuyendo así a incrementar la universalidad de la ciudad.
