Photographic exhibition created by ARANSBUR to raise awareness about the reality of deaf people

ARANSBUR has been working for the families of deaf people in Burgos for 49 years. In the more than 30 images that make up this exhibition—which can be visited from June 2nd to 19th at the "Miguel de Cervantes" library—we aim to show the reality of this community: the light and shadows that illuminate or darken their daily lives.

We are part of a diverse and rich reality . Let us show our respect for others by approaching them with empathy and tolerance. This is especially important in the case of deaf people, who have an invisible disability, not immediately apparent. Lack of access to information and communication barriers are a significant obstacle in their daily lives: completing bureaucratic tasks, going to the dentist, taking a pet to the vet, or answering a phone call are simple actions for the rest of society, but not for them.

Sign language , the presence of interpreters, subtitling, the installation of hearing loops, the commitment of public authorities, and the use of real-time transcription apps can alleviate and resolve some of these problems. In other words, accessibility versus silence. The exhibition features an audio guide, sign language guide, and audio description via QR codes using NaviLens technology, provided by the special employment center, MQD.

It also offers an auditory circuit with two activities that aim to put oneself in the place of a deaf person and experience firsthand the difficulties they have when it comes to understanding oral messages.

  • The first activity consists of matching a list with the different types of hearing loss and uses of technical aids, with the audios of how a deaf person approximately hears, depending on those levels of loss and/or use of technical aid.
  • The second activity consists of watching a series of very short videos, relating to situations in different areas (educational, legal, medical...) that do not have audio, so you have to try to read the lips and then answer a question to check what the consequence will be depending on what you have understood and answered.

Following these two activities, an explanation is given of what can be done to help the deaf person understand.
