Fernando Martínez Peña holds a PhD in Forestry Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). He specializes in the research field "Edible mushrooms: characterization and valorization of mycological resources." He is currently a researcher at the Center for Agrifood Research and Technology of Aragon (CITA).
He has been director of the Forestry Research Center of the Junta de Castilla y León in Soria (2007-2012), Research Director of the CITA of the Government of Aragon (2016-2020) and director of the European Mycological Institute (2016-2023). Author of 60 publications, of which 7 are books, 39 are articles in indexed scientific journals (WOS/Scopus) and 14 are book chapters/publications in other journals. Coordinator of 19 competitive R&D&I projects, European (2), national (11) and regional (6). Organizer of numerous scientific and technical conferences and congresses in the field of mycology and has participated as a speaker in numerous national and international conferences and congresses. He has belonged to 9 international and 6 national scientific committees. He has managed to establish a stable international multidisciplinary network of collaborators in 4 continents integrated into the European Mycological Institute (EMI). He has also contributed to teaching activities as an associate professor of Botany at the University of Valladolid and has supervised 2 doctoral theses and 5 final projects.
