Construction began in the 16th century (1543), Gaspar de Solórzano was responsible for the vaults. Pedro de Sierra built the shrine and the Baroque dome of the tower. The chapel next to the Gospel, the so-called 'Capilla de los Benavente' (it was founded by Álvaro Alonso de Benavente), was built by Jerónimo del Corral. It is covered by a golden stucco dome with a rich decoration of saints, monsters, laces, children and several capricious forms; the whole scene represents an allegory of life and death.

The altarpiece contains painted wooden figures by Juan de Juni telling the story of the Virgin in five bass-relieves topped off by an image of the Immaculate Conception. Under the chapel is the crypt and next to it a sacristy. The chapel is closed by a gorged iron grid by the great master Francisco Martínez.
