The town of San Esteban de Gormaz was a refuge for the daughters of el Cid from the beatings they endured from their husbands, the Condes de Carrión (the Counts of Carrión). It is one of the places most often mentioned in the poem, and therefore it is thought that one of the minstrels that wrote the poem may have been a resident of the town.
San Esteban de Gormaz is the start of the route through the land of Soria. On the last night that el Cid spent in Castilla he passed by here on his way to Navapalos where he found a bed for the night.
