Route through the Plateresque altarpieces in the east of the province of Leon - VALDAVIDA - Church of Saint Julian and Saint Basilisa
Main altarpiece in the Renaissance style with a linear layout, completed in the last third of the 16th century. The main altarpiece of Valdavida is structured with a predella, three sections of five sections and an attic. The first contains reliefs with passages from the books of Genesis and Numbers. The round sculptures of the titular saints, Saint Julian and Saint Basilissa, preside over the niches in the central section located above the tabernacle, while the side sections incorporate pictorial panels reproducing scenes from the Passion of Christ (in the lower section), passages from the hagiographies of Saint Julian the Hospitaller and Saint Julian the Martyr (in the central section), and passages from the life of the Virgin Mary (in the upper section). Above the latter, connected by small wings, rises the attic with a relief of Calvary on a painted background.
