Segovia's rich history
Museum of Segovia
Segovia Museum, which is also responsible for the Zuloaga Museum, exhibits over 1,500 works from the capital and the province, offering visitors the chance to discover the province’s seemingly endless historical and artistic wealth. The collection includes archaeological, ethnological and artistic exhibits, most of which are from the province itself.
Paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, medieval and Roman engraved stones, coins and other items dating back throughout history are all on display in this museum. Highlights include an anonymous alabaster sculpture of the Pieta, the Ecce Homo panel attributed to Ambrosius Benson or the 1667 painting of the Conversion of Saint Paul by Francisco Camilo, in addition to other fine sculptures and ceramics.
Of particular interest in the ethnology section are the exhibits relating to transhumance, the wool making process, the mills and fulling equipment. The archaeological section is particularly outstanding, and includes a magnificent collection of gold and silver items from several Visigoth necropolises discovered in the province of Segovia. This is a superb museum that provides a fascinating insight into a rich culture.
Edificios
Since 1997 the museum has been housed in a fortress on the city walls known as Casa del Sol. The museum is also responsible for the Zuloaga Museum, situated in the Church of San Juan de los Caballeros, one of Segovia’s most elaborately decorated Romanesque churches.
