It is a cathedral-castle, with fully integrated battlements, crenellations and lookout walkways.

Its history in inextricably linked to the history of the town. Its apse, for example, the so-called Cimorro, from which Alfonso VII looked out, a historic event, is the central motif of Ávila's coat-of-arms. It was the site of many an important event: the Holy Assembly of the Comuneros gathered here prior to their rebellion against Carlos I.

Consecrated to San Salvador, construction started in 1091. It was the first building to be erected by the settlers . After the Christian Reconquest was completed, it served as the town's only fortification.
