May Festival
This festival is celebrated every year on May 1st. In very rare exceptions over the years, the date has been changed, sometimes to April 29th or 30th for various reasons. Although the exact date of the festival's inception is unknown, it can be said that it has been celebrated since before 1950.
The cultural value of this festival lies in the traditional way of life in a forest environment. Hontoria del Pinar boasts a rich natural heritage, with landscapes of incalculable value, as a significant portion of its municipal area is located within the Cañon del Río Lobos Natural Park.
At the Fiesta de la Pingada del Mayo, or Maypole Festival, a typical and deeply rooted gastronomic tradition takes place. The young men participating share a fraternal meal featuring the traditional mountain stew, caldereta serrana. This stew is a traditional dish from the Pinares region and is made with lamb and potatoes as its main ingredients, along with other ingredients such as green and red bell peppers, onions, oil, garlic, and paprika. All of this is simmered in a large cauldron or 'perola' over embers and a pine wood fire...
