Monastery of San Antonio el Real
San Antonio el Real is one of the most beautiful and unique monastic complexes in Castilian heritage. Founded in the 15th century as a Franciscan convent and inhabited for centuries by the community of Poor Clares, it preserves a unique architecture and exceptional artistic wealth: coffered ceilings, coats of arms, altarpieces, royal chambers, and liturgical pieces have managed to overcome the implacability of time thanks to the care of the religious community that silently inhabited it. Today, it has reopened its doors to share that legacy. Art, spirituality, history, and memory unfold within its walls in a setting that combines contemplation, meditation, and living heritage.
The history of San Antonio el Real begins in 1454, when Prince Henry—the future Henry IV—received the El Campillo estate, a recreational spot in Segovia, from his father, John II. Upon ascending to the throne, he ceded it to the Franciscan Order, who built a convent there. Years later, Isabella the Catholic obtained a papal bull to move part of the community of Poor Clares to this space, where they would live for more than eight centuries. Within its walls, spiritual life and dynastic memory intertwine: it was an active convent, but also a royal hunting lodge, a residence linked to lineages, and a silent witness to disputes over the crown. The coats of arms of Henry IV and Joan of Avis, and the truncated history of La Beltraneja, still resonate in its rooms. The complex combines Gothic elements with notable Mudejar decoration and preserves valuable spaces: the refectory, chapter house, cloister, church, Baroque altar, and Flemish altarpieces. Today, that legacy is once again open to the world.
